For my birthday this year I am raising money for Bold Idea, a non-profit teaching kids the importance of applying technology to solve problems in their communities. As one of the original founders of Bold Idea the organization and mission are very close to my heart. Next year we are kicking off a new custom curriculum at several Dallas locations (including University of Texas Dallas, VMWare and Frisco Community Center), to not only give kids grades K-8 a foundation in coding but also show them how to apply it to whatever their interests may be.
Funds raised will be given 100% to the organization and will be used for materials such as coding software, programable robots and Chromebooks.
About Bold Idea
Bold Idea began when I met Robyn Brown and Ben Davis last year while we were volunteering for a Girl Scouts STEM workshop. We realized there were so many problems we wanted to solve while teaching these classes. The core of these problems were:
1. Technology will be pervasive in every industry, ability to code and the problem solving skills that come with that will be very important in almost all careers
2. Many of today's youths are exposed to technology but are users of tech rather than builders of tech. We want them to be able to see how technology can be applied to the community around them
3. Diversity in technology is lacking, while gender diversity is a huge topic the technology industry is lacking in several areas of diversity. We aim to have our classes be filled with students of every background from a young age so they are used to seeing any type of person code, and not feel like it is a skillset of only a certain group.
Today Bold Idea is supported by a strong Board of Directors and many dedicated volunteers all rallying around our mission statement "We develop and empower yougn minds to execute bold ideas as a team through the power of coding."
