When I started my journey as an international doc, I made a promise to never go to a place where I can't come back to follow up on patients. Now as this year draws to a close, I am trying to figure out how to return.
My most meaningful journey this year was going to Papua New Guinea in July 2015. It was an honor to be invited to provide a needed service to the villagers of Eastern Highlands. I not only learned about the fascinating cultures and customs, learned some Tok Pisin, but with a team was able to help 98 PNGers get their vision back from droopy lids and other ailments. Our trip was in part self-funded and in part sponsored by Moran Eye Center and the Himalayan Cataract Project and anonymous donors and I am forever grateful for that incredible opportunity!
Help me reach my goal to collect enough funds to buy surgical instruments, silicone slings and suture to support the doctor and nurses we trained at Mingende Rural Hospital.
In addition, I would like to collect Croc shoes to donate to the kids so that they could go to school and play outside. Why crocs? you might ask. I met a very smart boy Stivin who was one of many kids walking barefoot in the jungles. His feet were dirty and riddled with cuts and blisters. He gave me an idea while I was operating to help him with his crossed eyes. I had brought two pairs of croc shoes with me -- one for the operating room and one for walking around outside. My surgical crocs came in handy, they fit Stivin perfectly! and at lime green, weren't too girly, either. I want to help more kids who don't have access to sturdy shoes! Rubber shoes are light and easy to pack, and since PNG took 4 flights and 36 hours to get to, I'd like to take the most useful things. If you can spare your change, or your gently used shoes to this project, it would be the best birthday gift!

Thank you so much for supporting this cause, and sharing this with people who might also be able to help. I set a 3 month deadline for this and am 7% of the way there.
